Thailand Visa Extension (For Australians)

If you entered on a visa exemption (currently 60 days for air arrivals — a Cabinet-approved cut to 30 days, approved 19 May 2026, still pending Royal Gazette publication as of 10 August 2026 (per the Tourism Authority of Thailand and KPMG's GMS Flash Alert)) or a 60-day tourist visa, you can apply for one in-country extension: • Visa exemption → 30-day extension. Total stay: up to 90 days, under the current 60-day exemption. • Tourist visa (TR) → 30-day extension. Total stay: 90 days.

This extension is a one-time option per entry — it cannot be extended again. If you need more time after that, you must exit and re-enter (new exemption or tourist visa) or transition to a long-stay visa.

For Australians on Non-OA (retirement), Non-O (marriage/family/parent-of-Thai), or Non-B (employment): the annual extension is applied for at the Immigration Bureau for your province, before your current extension expires.

Documents vary by visa type but typically include: passport, relevant financial evidence (bank passbook + letter for Non-OA/Non-O), TM30 registration, TM.7 form, photograph.

Australian DTV holders can extend their initial 180-day stay by a further 180 days at Immigration — giving up to 360 days of continuous stay in Thailand before needing to exit and re-enter.

All extensions are done at the provincial Immigration office (Bangkok: Chaeng Watthana; Chiang Mai: Promenada; Phuket: Phuket Town). Arrive early, collect a queue number, submit your documents, pay 1,900 THB, receive the extension stamp — same day.

If your permission to stay expires before you apply for an extension, you are in overstay. Fines: 500 THB per day, plus potential entry bans. Apply before expiry, not on expiry day — many Immigration offices have reduced afternoon hours and long queues.
