Thailand Tourist Visa for Australians

Australian passport holders arriving by air at any international Thai airport receive a 60-day visa-exempt entry — no advance application required, no fee. This is the standard entry for tourists and short-stay visitors. The 60-day rule applies per entry, with a single extension of 30 days available at any Immigration office in Thailand for 1,900 THB.

Visa-exempt entries via land borders are limited to twice per calendar year per passport. If you are a frequent overland traveller between Thailand and neighbouring countries, this cap matters — the third or subsequent land entry in a calendar year may be refused. Air arrivals are not subject to this restriction.

If you plan to stay longer than 90 days (60 days + 30-day extension) or want the security of a formal visa stamp before travelling, the Thai Tourist Visa (TR) is the right choice. Applied for at a Thai consulate in Australia (Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, or Perth) before departure. Options: single-entry TR (60 days, extendable by 30 days); double-entry TR (two 60-day entries); and the 6-month multiple-entry TR for frequent travellers (METV, 60 days per entry, 6 months total validity). METV applications require proof of sufficient funds and accommodation records.

The Thai e-Visa portal (thaievisa.go.th) accepts Australian passport holders for Tourist Visa (TR) applications online. Processing is typically 3–5 business days. The e-Visa is a PDF you present at the port of entry — no physical sticker is required. Useful for avoiding the Thai consulate queue, particularly during peak periods (December–February).
